Heating Methods: Keeping your Gecko warm.
Here is one of the great things about Cresties as pets - they do not require any special heating! - Yup you read that right - they are perfectly happy to live in the temperature range that Humans prefer in their modern households! - The only time you need to be of concern is when things get too cold or too hot.
Now cold will only present a problem if the animals are kept in a room where it gets really cold. Very low temperatures will not necessarily kill the Cresties but it will tend to slow them right down - and obviously if it gets too cold then this will naturally cause them distress just as it would for you! It is best to keep them in a room where it will be fairly warm during the winter.
If necessary use a small low power heat lamp on top of the Terrarium (exo terra Terrarium provide light hoods for this purpose) during the colder months
The only other time temperature will pose a problem is during the very hot summer months. If it gets too hot Cresties can die off very quickly once the temperature gets too high. If they are in a room where it gets very hot during the warmer parts of the year - more ventilation - Air conditioning or moving to a cooler room is greatly advised.
the comfortable temperature range for Cresties is estimated to be between 60ºF and the high 70's ºF
If at any time the temps get above 80 ºF then ventilation will be required:
Measuring Temperatures & Humidity
Temperature also has a direct connection to humidity levels, so reliable temperature and humidity monitoring equipment is critical to maintaining health. Digital meters are typically more accurate than analog meters and exo terra provide a range of these for their Terrarium's which cost usually less than £8-£10 and are designed to be fitted onto a rail on the hoods.
But a simple meter that can be stuck to the glass inside the Terrarium will also be sufficient if not as accurate as the digital ones.
